Mango

Mango, the king of fruits is the second major fresh fruit in Pakistan. Mango is a delicious fruit grown in slightly less than ninety tropical and sub-tropical countries in the world. The fruit is mostly eaten farm fresh as a dessert. It is also processed into preserves, juices, jams, jellies, nectars as well as crisp mango chips, which are eaten as snacks. Mango is an excellent source of vitamins A. B and C and contains water, proteins, Sugar. fats, fibers and iron etc.

SINDHRI (MANGO)

This fine variety is produced in the Sindh Province. It is in large size, yellow in color, fibreless, and oval shaped stone in medium size. It is very sweet in taste and has a pleasant fragrance. This variety is available from the Month of 20th May to 20th July.

CHONSA (MANGO)

This variety is produced in the province of Punjab. It is extremely sweet in taste and very delicious. Fresh, firm and fiber less, it is available after 15th June to the end of August.

Pakistan is blessed with vast agricultural resources on account of its fertile land, well-irrigated plains, extremes of weather, and centuries old tradition of farming. It is because of its central importance in the economy that the Government has identified agriculture as one of the four major drivers of growth.

Pakistan annually produces about 2 million tons of potatoes. Though varying from year to year, area and production of potatoes in Pakistan have exhibited an increasing trend over the past 10 years.

The agro-ecological diversity obtained in the country enables production of potatoes almost around the year. However bulk of the potato crop is harvested from January to March. Potato can be safely stored up to 6 months. The autumn crop is placed in cold stores in addition to feeding the instant market.

Kinnow is a Citrus fruit variety Mandarin majorly grown in the province of Punjab. Pakistan is the sixth largest producer of Kinow (mandarin) and Mandarin Kinnow in the world, with 2.1 million tons. Pakistan world mandarin and Mandarin Kinnow market share during the year 1997 was 0.9 percent and 3.6 percent in terms of value and volume respectively. Pakistan is also the largest producer of ‘Citrus Reticula’ variety (Kinow), this unique variety of citrus is indigenous to this part of the world. According to an estimate approx. 95 percent of the total Kinow produced all over the world is grown in Pakistan.

Citrus cultivars are grown in varying quantities in countries with tropical or sub tropical climate. Citrus stands first in area and production among the worlds tree fruits. In Pakistan also, citrus fruits are the most important fruit crops grown on the area of 160,000 hectares with production of 1.5 MMT annually. Kinnow season starts in November and ends in March, a longer picking season than any other citrus variety. It is consumed direct as a fruit as well as juice (fresh & concentrates).
